Maybe the term "edgy" has come about because in a society where conformity is becoming king, it's a lot easier to make fun of somebody for their "edge" instead of trying to argue against their ideas.

I thought of this after reading about Nietzsche (spelling?); yes there is one person in my post history calling me edgy.
