A Serious Question to Parents Concerning "We Need to Talk About Kevin" (Spoilers Inside)

one thing I want to ask is, as parents, just how responsible are we for what our children do on their own when they're 16 or 17?

In the film, "We Need to Talk About Kevin" the older son (who is 16 at the time) we find out is responsible for a school massacre (with a compound bow of all things, it's pretty crazy) and the mother (after the fact) gets treated like shit, scorned by the parents, punched in the face by a mother (whom I'm guessing lost a child in the massacre), treated badly (somewhat sexually) by a male co-worker at a party explaining that no one would want her now, red paint (representing blood) thrown on the front of her house, her front door, and her car...does that seem fair?

Should she be held accountable? How can you stop something or control something you have no idea is going to happen? I know this is some pretty heavy questions but after watching the film I was just wondering what other people might think so I thought I'd take it to Reddit

Personally, I feel like the she is not responsible, what you say? I ask as a curious parent myself...
