It's often discussed how people can't really fathom recasting iconic characters like Tony Stark or Wolverine, who have been inexorably linked to their actors. The closest parallel I can think of in cinema is in 1972 when Sean Connery passed the throne to Roger Moore for James Bond. In retrospect, that transition worked out just fine, both Moore and Connery were great Bonds, and now audiences just accept the fact that James Bond changes actors every decade.
But are there any film historians or even people old enough to remember at the time how people felt about the recasting? Were people hesitant, or angry, or not willing to accept a different actor? Are there any other parallels with regards to a character being recast that did or didn't work out?
