Humans have the capability of showing proof of something that have happened by e.g showing a picture, showing a painting in a cave or show a temple/building from the past (which still remains). We also have litterature which provide some sort of proof even though it can be manipulated and also fictional, but it still works as a proof.
Other species just can't. If we take a lion for example, he will not be able to prove to his cubs which beasts he slayed before or that his great grand-father was the leader of the flock. All he can do is simply tell them and they have to believe it, making it a "rumor".
