I made a list of all the properties that Disney could include in their proposed streaming service once the acquisition of FOX is finalised.

I have compiled a list of all the major (and some minor) intellectual property that Disney will own when they finalize the acquisition deal with fox. In this post I will highlight all of the studios owned by Disney as well as who holds the distribution rights. I will also use the information I have found online to merit a guess as to what will be available on their planned streaming service ahead of it's launch in 2019, as well as giving my opinion at the end.

(TBR/TBA: Untitled Han Solo Movie, Star Wars: Episode IX, Indiana Jones 5, Untitled Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy) It is also worth mentioning that with the acquisition of Lucasfilm they also purchased Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas’ visual/practical effects company.

  • Marvel Studios Movies [Notable I.P] (In No Particular Order): Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Blade (TBR/TBA: Captain Marvel, Infinity War 1 & 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Untitled Avengers Movie, Black Widow, Deathlok, Sub-Mariner and The Hands of Shang-Chi and likely slew of sequels and lesser known characters. They are likely all being kept under wraps until Infinity War Part 1 is released).

It doesn’t seem like they have made much at this point, but with the recent acquisition of Fox as well as the news that they have 20 movies already planned following ‘Infinity War’, it is likely we will be seeing a lot more marvel movies to come. For obvious reasons I cannot include some major Marvel movies such as Spiderman, Venom, Gambit, the Punisher and Daredevil series in this list because they have either licensed the film rights or the distribution rights to another company i.e. Sony, Fox and Netflix.

  • Major Studios Bought through Fox Acquisition:

  • 20th Century Fox [Notable I.P/Distribution] (In no particular order) Avatar (Franchise), X-Men (Franchise), Wolverine, the Fantastic Four (Franchise), Deadpool, the Planet of the Apes (franchise), Alien/Prometheus (Franchise), Kingsman (Franchise), The Original Star Wars Trilogy (distribution), Alita: Battle Angel, the X-Files, the Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show, Home Alone, Independence Day, Die Hard, the Sound of Music, Murder on the Orient Express etc.

While it’s easy to get carried away with hypotheticals, it is quite apparent that Disney wants to have a streaming service catalogue that will dwarf all others in both quality (subject to personal tastes) and quantity. Now, as far as the secret streaming service that has been announced, there are currently no details as to what it will be called, any specific dates and whether or not their entire catalogue of Disney, Marvel, Fox and Lucasfilm content will be made available or if it will exclude specific properties because of split distribution rights etc.

As of the acquisition being finalized, Disney will own 60% of HULU stock (30% already owned, 30% acquired through fox deal), it is a safe bet that they would not run the risk of devaluing their ~$21,000,000.00 stake in HULU, this warrants the assumption that Disney is most likely going to use it’s controlling interest in HULU to facilitate the rollout of its new streaming service, meaning they already have the infrastructure ready. With a wealth of both Disney, Fox and other production companies content already on the platform, it seems to be the perfect match for Disney, however it seems likely that HULU will be rebranded. There has been no word yet on any specific titles, but in a recent interview with Disney CEO Bob Iger, he said;

“We’ll make original films for the platform, probably about five a year. Those will be made specifically for the platform. And we’ll do the same for television. We’ll make original TV series; we’ll take Disney Channel series and move them eventually to this platform. And we’ll also fill it in with shorts and other library product. So it’ll have thousands of hours of Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars-branded product on it.”

There is currently no word on whether Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm properties will remain exclusive to the streaming platform, however it has been confirmed that all future Walt Disney Studios movies will remain exclusive to the streaming service. Disney has announced that it plans to periodically remove a large portion of their current and newly acquired intellectual property from other streaming services.

My Personal Take On This Situation This acquisition may seem daunting for competing streaming services such as Netflix, HBO, Amazon and other smaller service, but it is a common practice for streaming services to have exclusive content (Netflix: Stranger Things. Amazon: The Grand Tour. HBO: Game of Thrones). The goal for most streaming services is to have a content library that separates your service from the competition. It is quickly becoming apparent that Disney’s content library is growing bigger and faster than anybody could have predicted (other than the Simpsons of course). Like most people, the idea of a streaming service with every piece of Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar, 20th Century Fox and National Geographic content (plus some miscellaneous content from other big name studios) sounds incredible, and for the most part, it is. The reason I am not overly concerned over the possibility of Disney potentially 'monopolising' the streaming industry is due to the fact that Disney’s I.P fits a certain ‘family friendly’ criteria (the vast majority of the time), that can be consumed by the largest demographic. However, it is plain to see that Disney would not be able to compete in all areas and genre’s of streaming. For example, HBO makes Games of Thrones; one of the most violent, (awesome), intense, non-PC shows around today and there is no way it would fit in with Disney’s image, the same goes with Netflix; they create shows like Black Mirror that are one of a kind, the type of show that Disney couldn’t associate their family friendly brand with.

I guess what I am trying to emphasize is the distinctions that can be clearly made between each individual streaming service, Disney can target a broad demographic because they make quality content that anybody can watch and enjoy. Netflix targets the same demographic, but the difference is they have a much broader range of content (From Black Mirror, to Stranger Things, to Narcos and everything in between that can all be binge watched in a single sitting. Each individual streaming service seems to have a rough idea of their place in the streaming landscape, so, to finalize, I don’t personally fear the repercussions of a Disney streaming service, because at the end of the day, it is only going to give the consumer more options that align with their tastes.

Now on a final, completely unrelated note, I wish Disney would licensee the film and television rights to Zelda. I fear the day may never come where I see a proper Zelda TV series or movie based on Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask Nintendo 64 games This is a great animated/live action Majora's Mask short [made by Ember Labs] that I think would suit Disney's style very well). Out of all the studios in Hollywood, Disney has possibly one of the best track records for adapting material into movies while staying true to the original tone and source material. I would love to see Zelda universe adapted for film one day and it seems Disney is the only company that has the reach to make it happen.

Anyway, post over, I tried my best to include as much information and as many titles as I could, please let me know in the comments what you think, I’m really interested in having an open and honest discussion in the comments because, let’s be honest, this is really exciting, Marvel and Lucasfilm have been made whole (Excluding Spiderman... For now).
