Why was Bob Vila fired from PBS's "This Old House" for doing an outside endorsement while the Sesame Street characters can do advertisements for Chrysler?

In 1989 Bob Vila left PBS's "This Old House" following a disagreement with management over outside endorsements. But now we see Bert and Ernie doing endorsements for Chrysler with no repercussions.
