"The Invitation" and other movies that I feel dumb for not getting

Today I found the movie The Invitation on Netflix. It seemed like a psychological thriller movie kind of in the vein of Get Out or 10 Cloverfield Lane, which immediately appealed to me. This movie, however, was far less satisfying to me than the aforementioned two. I found it incredibly confusing. Even so, I read various reviews of it online and on Reddit and discovered everybody seemed to understand what was going on in the plot the entire time perfectly. Various motifs such as the protagonist's memories of his son's death and Eden's attempted suicide completely went over my head, and it took me a while to realize that the film was not about a swingers' party but rather a suicide cult. I wonder if it was my brain's failing to comprehend the movie that caused this problem or the fact that the movie itself just did a bad job tying up loose ends.

Does anyone else have this problem? Has anything (subtitles, etc.) helped with it?
