I watched Hostel last year. I know a lot of people hate it because it's basically just torture-porn, but for some reason, I thought it was entertaining. It took a while for things to start happening, but I was on edge for the entire movie, not sure who to trust or what to expect. I thought the main characters were likable, and I really felt for them. I appreciated the odd moments of levity in an otherwise incredibly disturbing movie, and I really liked that aside from the gore, it almost became more thriller than horror near the end. Although, my favorite thing was that a movie so determined to make the audience feel awful actually let the main character live. I really appreciated that.
I never bothered with the second one because it had this specific look to it that I associate with bad horror movies. I'm not sure how exactly to describe it. It's just a dark, grimy look with a green-ish tint. The first looked like it could have been any movie from the early 2000's, but the second just looks so bleh. I recently came back to the first movie, and I decided to give the second one a chance. Apparently this one picks up right where the first one left off, and the main character is killed immediately after returning home, because apparently the killers from the first movie have ties to everywhere. Then, it turns out it was just a nightmare. He's still alive, and he's living with a woman now. I'm back on board. She wakes up the next morning, comes down for breakfast, and his headless corpse is just sitting there, because those people actually do have ties to everywhere. That's when I stopped the movie.
