Why, when Nicholson's character Gittes has found the glasses and sent off Evelyn, does he call her villain father to confront him with no back-up plan? He shows up with a henchman and a gun and forces Gittes to lead them straight to Evelyn. And Gittes is just like "whelp, I guess you've got me let me lead you right to the person I've been trying to protect the whole movie. Guess that's Chinatown am I right?" It's the climax of the movie and it makes no sense.
All we've seen all movie is how competent and clever Gittes is, and all of a sudden he makes a completely nonsense decision. Does anyone know why?
