I want to talk about The Comedy (2012) with Tim Heidecker.

I loved what this film had to say. It didn't offer any catharsis or much of a character arch, but held what a very relevant and poignant mirror to hipster culture. Basically if you are unwilling to offer your genuine self toward something, and choose to keep anyone and everything (family, relationships) apart from yourself through "irony" you're going to feel very sad and lonely.

It's not funny. It's not supposed to be funny. You have lonely people who are incapable of being a part of anything and it makes them miserable. All their friendships and relationships are on the surface covered by sheen of "irony".

You kind of feel for Swanson in the ways that he acts out because he doesn't have the tools to live a life with meaning/purpose or form meaningful relationships. His behavior is abhorrent, but instead of hating him, I just felt massive amounts of pity and lament for a wasted life and his inability to make a genuine connection with family relationships, friendships, or to challenge himself to find his life's purpose.

It felt like a giant cautionary tale for anyone in their 20s.

What'd you think?
