So many horror films considered good and even great, use jumpscares. And admittedly, if done correctly, they can be very effective. But it seems to me that, as the years have gone on, filmmakers seem to have gotten more and more reliant on them, almost as though they believe it's they only device available to them to generate a good scare. Of course this is a slight exaggeration, but whatever happened to horror films that scared and even terrified you with their story, and character development, lighting, and sound. Even the great Exorcist, used a couple of (in my opinion) completely unncecessary jumpscares.
