So after just watching Lady Bird I think I've had enough of the "coming of age" film plot. Personally I feel like it has just been overdone, but critics can't seem to get enough of it.
I think Lady Bird kind of sums up all of the negative aspects of these kinds of films. First off, its a zero sum plot. After the film ended I felt like nothing was accomplished and I just looked in on an average person's life for two hours. Secondly, it just lays the cringey stuff on you scene after scene. I mean looking back I know I was clueless with relationships in high school too, but I don't think I was THAT bad. I just feel like there's a bad trend where filmmakers with high school characters think the more cringeworthy a relationship is, the more genuine it's supposed to feel.
Overall I thought Lady Bird had good characters, but the plot as a whole really made me feel like I got nothing out of my hour and a half watching it.
