The plot line and scenes that I can remember.
Main character is a girl in middle school who is learning about peer pressure. In her friend group, she is easily pushed around.
There’s an old woman character in the neighborhood who is very sweet to the main girl and her friends. However, the friends don’t like the old woman and complain when the main girl defends her.
Later the old woman invites all the girls to a “birthday party” that she is throwing for herself. It is heavily implied that the old woman lives alone and truly means well.
All the girls say to the old woman’s face that they will attend the party, but behind the old woman’s back the friend group decides to not show up, leaving the old woman all alone at the party.
There’s a heart wrenching scene of the old woman taking so much time and loving care into this adorable party only for her to worry that no one was going to show up.
But of course, the main little girl learns to not fall into the trap of peer pressure, and shows up to the party and connects in a true friendship with the kind older woman.
I believe the main little girl also brought her little brother to the party at the end. I have this distinct memory of the main girl saying “we’re here for your party” when the old woman opens the door.
Any help finding this would be greatly appreciated.
