Anyone ever deal with people watching/listening to something else during a movie?

The title speaks for itself but let me set the scene a little...

My friend and I went to see Isle of Dogs tonight. It’s a mid evening showing. We get to the theater and sit about three seats away from two other dudes. They looked to be in their 30s (its dark, kinda hard to tell). There’s not a lot of people in the theater, I would say maybe a dozen people.

All seems fine and well. Except for during the quieter parts of the previews we can hear sound coming from these two dudes. I’m talking like a radio, or video playing...it was almost like sitcom noise. My friend and I look at each other and roll our eyes. They’re watching a video on their phones during the preview, whatever, just ignore them. Well it doesn’t stop... we’re past all of the previews and now the opening studio logos are rolling and they’re still listening to some damn show. What the hell?

I’m looking over at them and other people around me are looking at them... I’m not one to ever say anything to people being rude in movie theaters. I don’t think I’ve ever “shushed” the noisy people or people talking. But who the hell plays audio during a movie!!? So I say “is there a reason why you guys are listening to the radio?” The one closest to me barely turns his head. He just kinda side glances and goes heh “it sounds like that doesn’t it.” Okay... I didn’t respond after this because like I said, I’m not really a confrontational person. Nobody else in the theater said anything. These assholes proceeded to listen to whatever it was for the entire movie save the last 20 minutes or so.

Just a couple more things: it wasn’t a hearing impaired device or translation. At first I felt kinda bad (based on the guys weird response) that maybe they needed an extra speaker or something because they were hard of hearing. Nope. The sound was definitely related to some other content (it had a laugh track at certain points and even someone singing God Bless or America or some shit). Also, they were both drinking beers (provided from our theaters tap) but weren’t acting drunk or disruptive in any other way. Oh yeah and I couldn’t see any phone or device, I could only hear the freaking noise (no lights).

Anyway, I still enjoyed my movie. Had I been able to hear their audio during louder parts of the movie I probably would have told a manager or someone. I’m just baffled why anyone would do that and think it’s okay. Have any of you ever dealt with something like this? Would you have done anything differently?

TLDR. Two dudes were playing a movie or talk show during Isle of Dogs. I spoke up and got a weird response... they played their sound through 90% of the movie but it could only be heard in quieter moments. Not sure what to do next time.
