Originally the title was going to be “Is Christopher Nolan a good filmmaker?” But his movies are mostly well made, and then it was going to be “Is Christopher Nolan a good storyteller?” But not all my issues with his films are story based, so I’ve settled with “Does Christopher Nolan deserve so much praise?”
His Filmography: 1) Following 2) Memento 3) Insomnia 4) Batman Begins 5) The Prestige 6) The Dark Knight 7) Inception 8) The Dark Knight Rises 9) Interstellar 10) Dunkirk
All of these films have over 70% on RT.
I’ve seen 8 out of his 10 films and I’d only consider 3 as great films (Memento, The Dark Knight, and Dunkirk). The other 5 are all between fine and good.
My main issues are with The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar.
The Prestige is such a heavy-handed metaphor for the three act structure and it’s very obvious Nolan’s meant to be Jackman’s character. Also, The Cloning Machine ruins that movie.
Inception came out 8 years ago and still to this day I hear people saying they that movie blew their minds and that they had trouble understanding it, but what’s not to understand. The movie’s plot is extremely simple.
My issues with Interstellar are mostly to do with the sound design and how dialogue is sometimes drowned out by the score.
If I had to sum up Nolan’s filmography it would be that he makes films to make dumb people feel smart, and whilst I think he’s a good filmmaker, I don’t understand why he’s so acclaimed.
I’m sure I’m going to get downvoted and told I’m wrong but if anyone has any points different to mind I’d love to hear them.
