How can I train myself to be more empathetic rather than sympathetic with others?

I have a tendency to be too sympathetic and actually mirror the emotions of those that I am around. I am a caring person and I listen to people a lot - I'm known as someone that people can talk to. But sometimes I find that it affects me because I will take on that persons emotions and I might feel depressed, angry, or just generally anxious when it's not actually my story causing those feelings.
