So, this has bothered me for a long time.
I love "kung-fu" movies. Love them. I watch them all. But I've found the name to be a little too... genera...l and does a disservice to the genre(s?).
Ong Bak is a Thai martial arts film.
Crouching Tiger is a Wuxia film. A good candidate for a catchall but it's specifically Chinese.
IP-Man is a combo Japanese / Chinese
13 Assassins is Japanese
You get the idea.
Is it improper to think they can be put into a single category? Western action is largely characterized into "action" but Asiatic films always bare the distinction AFAIK.
Is there an official term for these "kung-fu" films?
