When I originally saw the film in the theaters (16 years ago, lord), I was thirteen, expected more of a straight up alien invasion film, and was left disappointed. There was some genuinely shocking moments - the birthday party video, leg in the cornstalks, hand from the grate - but the rest of the film sort of faded into obscurity for me.
It's amazing what time does...
Not only do those same shocking moments STILL hold up - the leg in the cornstalks gave me legit chills down my spine this time - but I finally saw how well crafted the rest of the film is. The methodical direction and pacing coupled with the warm/lush cinematography is something to behold. The entire family unit is great as well and even though Mel Gibson has seen rough times since, he is truly an incredible actor and this film is testament to that.
The ending was always controversial ("Water is what kills them?!"), but I was able to let that slide as the film is ultimately about faith and believing in something. I never felt like it was heavy-handed and loved the montage at the end as Mel realizes everything is happening for a reason.
Finally, the score was memorable for a reason. It's simply fantastic. Equal parts suspenseful, eerie, uplifting, and always propulsive. If you live out in the country or farmland area, play it and you'll feel both at peace and wanting to lock your doors. It's James Newton Howard at his best.
Just wanted to share my thoughts. If you haven't seen the film in awhile, I would suggest taking another look. It's really quite something and makes me yearn for when Hollywood was more interested in these types of films.
