Just finished watching A Quiet Place and thought it was great. The film is quite different to the original screenplay which was written by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck.
The original screenplay was then re-written by John Krasinski and a lot of scenes changed and added.
If anyone is interested, I've summarised the main changes and differences below between the first draft/original screenplay and the final film.
Interestingly, the script also provides some answers to details in the film such as how the girl lost her hearing, and hints at where the creatures came from.
NOTE: The details below contains spoilers for the film.
John Krasinski's character is known as JOHN in the script.
Emily Blunt's character is known as MIA in the script.
Noah Jupe's character (their son) is known as WILL in the script.
Millicent Simmonds' character (the deaf girl) is known as APRIL in the script. In the script she can hear partially, uses a hearing aid and is not totally deaf.
-
The opening scene where their son is killed by the creature is not in the original script.
-
There is only one creature in the screenplay, not multiple creatures.
-
There are flashback scenes in the script, which show that instead of their son that was killed, they had a teenage daughter called ‘IRIS’. The flashbacks are just of IRIS and APRIL (the girl with poor hearing) in a field together talking, and of IRIS arguing with her father JOHN.
-
Instead of the creature killing IRIS, there is a flashback showing her being killed in a car crash whilst JOHN is driving, and he blames himself. APRIL is also in the car – this is how she lost her hearing, the crash caused it.
-
The family have a dog – a golden retriever - which wears a muzzle to prevent it from barking. It is tied on a leash outside.
-
There is no scene with the old man screaming like in the movie.
-
MIA (Emily Blunt) goes outside to look for their dog which was tied up. She just finds the rope with frayed edges and no dog suggesting the creature ate it.
-
In the scene where MIA’s water breaks and she gives birth, in the original script she doesn’t step on a nail, and the creature doesn’t come to the house until it hears the baby cry. She gives birth in the first 20 minutes rather than halfway through.
-
When they are heading to the shed with the baby, JOHN and MIA/the baby get separated as the creature stands between them. JOHN creeps around the creature, but steps on a twig, then sprints to the shed and they lock the door. They then use an MP3 player on loud speaker to distract the creature.
-
There is a tense scene in the script where JOHN is climbing off a roof, but his shirt gets caught on a staple and tears – at the same time several roof tiles start sliding off and he catches them all, avoiding any noise.
-
There is no scene with the creature and MIA and the baby in a flooded basement
-
MIA steps on the nail in the basement whilst holding the baby, but holds her scream.
-
APRIL escapes the grain silo by the creature creating a hole in the structure, and she slides out. She runs to a river and jumps in, but stays under water and sees the creature above her before she is carried down stream.
-
JOHN tries to trap the creature in a wind turbine.
-
He places alarms in different locations around the area with different alarm times, so he can ‘guide’ the creature to the wind turbine.
-
The plan goes wrong, and JOHN slips and breaks his arm.
-
WILL (John's son) who is by himself finds one of the alarms near a lake whilst he is on a rowboat. The alarm goes off and the creature jumps out of the water, capsizing the rowboat. The creature is then distracted by an alarm nearer the turbine.
-
The creature can see perfectly in total darkness. It enters the wind turbine and JOHN races to the top of the wind turbine and escape through a hatch.
-
The script mentions that in one scene at the top of the wind turbine, we can see what looks like a crashed alien ship in the distance. It is described as an 'Alien Dropship'.
-
The creature is racing up the inside of the wind turbine. JOHN closes the hatch at the top and uses a rope to rappel down to the bottom and locks the creature inside the wind turbine.
-
He then shouts for APRIL as the creature is trapped and can't get to them. JOHN finds APRIL and WILL. The creature escapes the turbine.
-
APRIL uses a signal booster/generator that is hidden inside a scarecrow inside a corn field. It works in the same way that it does in the film, but can kill the creature not just disorientate it.
-
In the script, JOHN sacrifices himself like in the film, but then APRIL uses the signal booster to kill the creature.
-
Through flashbacks, it is revealed JOHN blames himself for IRIS dying in the car crash and for APRIL losing her hearing, which also created the bad relationship between JOHN and WILL/APRIL.
-
At the end, MIA, APRIL, WILL and the baby visit the graves where JOHN and IRIS are buried next to each other and plant flowers.
-
We find out the baby has been named IRIS.
-
There is no final confrontation like in the movie - i.e. there is no scene with MIA holding the shotgun in the basement.
