I just want to start off this post by saying, I truly believe if you are skipping out on silent films, you are missing out on amazing art. So with that being said, I wanted to make this post. It was Silent Sunday on TCM, and they happened to be showing a classic, The Scarlet Letter, featuring Lillian Gish & Lars Hanson.
Getting into silent film can be tough for the average person, even getting into classic movies with sound is tough for people. I only got into silent film because of a class I took my Freshman year of college that was all about silent movies, and I think that is a great way to be introduced. The first film we watched was Birth of a Nation, and that movie is known as the first film considered to be art. While that movie is very interesting, long, racist, (it also features Lillian Gish, who is widely known as the first lady of film) I suggest that not be the first silent movie you watch.
If you have any desire to get into the silent era, I highly suggest this film to be the first one you watch. Its such a simple movie, but MAN is it really good. Plus, its all a story we know, so that might make it a little easier for a beginning audience. Lillian Gish is also a beaut, which makes the movie even more enjoyable. This movie is great as a first time watch, and I really just want people to be able to enjoy all these great, classic movies that I feel people today do not even give a chance. Silent horror movies are also very great, as the silence and music just adds an extra eerie atmosphere. Its really interesting to see where movies we watch come from, and just how they have changed over all the years.
So that is my little rant about silent films and why I think people should watch them more. If you do end up watching it, or any silent movie for that matter, I would love to hear what you think!
(P.S. I also enjoy modern movies but I was in the mood to type about silent era films and all their greatness)
