I just read "The Thin Man" by Dashiell Hammett -- really fun novel -- and then watched the 1934 film starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, the original husband and wife lush detectives. Such a great story and film, and it's really perfect for our time, especially in our current revival of cocktail culture.
When everything else has been remade and rebooted, how has this gem escaped? There's huge opportunity for a new franchise here, and it's especially rich because the 1934 film really took a lot of liberties with the book, simplifying the core mystery and flattening many of the characters in a way that just begs for this to be remade in all its richness.
George Clooney seems like the obvious choice for Nick, with his old-school movie star charm, sharp wit, dashing, etc. I'm tempted to name some options for Nora (OK, Aubrey Plaza might be amazing, but she's probably too young), but I'm sure Reddit has better ideas than I have. It's really an incredible part. The Nick and Nora relationship is so incredibly fun, and both the film and the novel leave a lot on the table for the right pair of actors to explore and make something wonderful.
By the way, my favorite Nick and Nora are Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster as Nick and Sadie Doyle in "The Thrilling Adventure Hour" podcast, but we'll just set that aside.
Watching the film, I thought Christian Bale would make the perfect policeman Guild.
I don't have any other ideas, but I'm sure you do. And the film would need a masterful director (or directors).
