I couldn't find past mentions of this on this subreddit, so I thought I'd make a post. I enjoy movies so much better if I wear High-Fidelity Earplugs to showings. Especially during action sequences, I'm able to hear dialogue much better, and I feel more immersed. When the movie gets loud enough to vibrate your seat I can still feel that, but I don't have to worry about hearing damage.
One movie won't severely damage your hearing, but over time they can be loud enough to cause cumulative damage. That damage happens faster in children. High Fidelity earplugs (ETY ER20 or Hearos are two brands I've heard good things about) are sub 20 bucks, and last as long as it takes for you to lose them. They work by decreasing the volume of loud sounds while preserving the quieter sounds. They're markedly better than foam earplugs imo. They're great for concerts and make live music sound better too.
Consider trying them out, I've converted a few of my friends into wearing them.
