I enjoyed Ready Player One. For all its faults, it has some of the craziest, funnest, and most chaotic action scenes I've ever seen, and while that may be small praise for a Spielberg film, I feel like that's more or less what he was going for.
Only problem is, the movie has no sound.
There was that crazy race scene at the beginning (which was bloody fantastic), but the scene isn't scored. Considering that the first we saw of that scene was set to Rush, it feels strangely empty without it. Not only that, but the sounds you'd expect from the environment are muted. You'll hear cars hitting each other and things exploding, but it never really conveys the chaos that's happening onscreen. It's jarring to see so much and hear so little. This also happens near the end, with the big charge on the place on that planetsorryiwatcheditonfriday. The screen shows you utter chaos, the sound gives you the impression that you're watching some dudes play laser tag. Which you are, but laser tag doesn't usually have Mechagodzilla fighting the Iron Giant.
And the score. Going back to every damn trailer for this movie, they all have the same theme. And it's not bad. I mean, it isn't exactly fantastic, but it does help convey that sense of awe that made the trailers so cool. There's also the dude who put up his own theme, which was rejected in favour of Silvestri's, and that shit slaps, man so you already know going into this movie that the music is going to be fantastic.
And then you get Silvestri's theme, which sounds like something out of Toy Story.
The soundtrack does the film little justice. It's clean, pleasantly symphonic, and bloody useless. It just doesn't fit. I guess considering that the movie is both an 80s pop culture fest and a sci-fi action movie, little really could have bridged the gap. And when Spielberg does bust out the old songs, fine, it's alright. But I would have killed for a synthwave soundtrack. If you have time check this out.
Like I said, enjoyable movie. But it needs a patch.
