Anyone else see The Florida Project? Some brief thoughts about it.

So I absolutely loved the film. It was beautifully shot, the actors/actresses were amazing, and the juxtaposition of this little down-and-out motel in the middle of the most magical place on earth was perfect.

I love slice of life stories, and this film captures the “life” part of slice of life more than any other movie I’ve seen recently. I loved how it captured how lively and spirited these people are that live in the motel, and all the cool little moments that they share. Like Dafoe covering up that one tenant’s chest in the pool area, the dancing in the rain, the kids hanging out in the tree, the excitement of fights and fires, and the little exchanges as they pass each other by.

I’m a sucker for stories about people who are down on their luck; for people that America kind of just forgets about. Probably because for 25 years or so if my life I can relate to that.

And then there’s Haley. I really enjoyed her character, and I thought she was amazing for being an Instagram actress. Even though she did many questionable things, I could honestly empathize with her through the whole entire film.

TLDR: UNTIL she beat the shit out of Scootie’s mother in front of him. I just couldn’t justify this. It made me pissed off, made me okay with whatever the hell happened to her.

Through out the whole film I was kind of rooting for her, until she did this, then I was just like... Well, ya got what’s coming to you.

Did anyone else feel this way? Ashley was being a bit mouthy, but I definitely don’t think she had that coming. Especially in front of the kid.

It really fucked up my perception of the film. I’m not sure if that’s what the director intended, but it honestly seemed unnecessary. It’s not like she just punched her once either, she got her down on the ground and just wailed on her face over and over and over and Ashley did nothing.

Ashley helped Haley and Moonee more than they could ever thank her for, and this is what she gets for it.

I just wanted to see what y’all thought. I thought it was an interesting choice by the director.

Either way, it was still an awesome film, and after Tangerine and now this, I’m excited to see where the director goes next.
