Can we talk about Blazing Saddles?

I haven't watched Blazing Saddles in several decades, but remembered it being funny and inappropriate.

I want to watch it again, because it seems to be an important movie in cinema history. But given how the discussion of race relations have evolved in our cultural discussion, especially in terms of PC and continued systemic discrimination, I'm wondering how I should go about watching it.

I feel knowing the context of this film is important. Is it just gratuitously racist, or is it saying something about race relations? If it is, how does it reflect the times it was in? And finally, how do we view it now, several decades after the fact?
