In Darkness (2018) Spoiler Free Review

In Darkness is about a blind women who experiences the death of her shifty upstairs neighbor, and everything else starts to unfold. This is another film that’s very easy to spoil so I’ll try my best here.

The film does get interesting, eventually. I feel like the second half was a lot more enjoyable then the first half. The second half got me super invested in the characters and what’s going to happen next, even when it does get over complicated. I know this seems like a backhanded complement but… well, I guess it is, but it is a compliment none the less.

There are very few action scenes, which is ok because the film isn’t supposed to be an action flick, but for the little action scenes there are, the action is pretty good. I did enjoy watching these scenes and made me want more.

I like what it did with the fact that the character is blind. Not going to spoil it, but it’s pretty creative and the filmmakers take full advantage of the fact that the main character is blind. Very cool.

This movie employs the tactic of revealing info about the characters at a slow trickle, and although this does work for some movies, it just doesn’t do it for this one. You know how I praised the second half of the film? Well the first half is the half that’s supposed to be mysterious. The problem is, so little is revealed that instead of it being mysterious, I just didn’t care. As more info is revealed, I started to care, but I was left wishing I knew at least a little more about the characters earlier because I feel it would’ve made the first half more interesting.

At the end, I feel like the movie gets needlessly complicated. Not a big complaint, but it really could’ve done without some of the complexity.

In Darkness is a half good/ half bad film. Luckily, the second half is worth the wait, and warrants a recommendation to anyone that likes thrillers and doesn’t mind waiting a bit for the film to pick itself up.

6/10 Good

(If there's anything you don't like about this review, please leave a comment! Constructive criticism is the only way I'll get better. I'll also be more than happy to discuss other opinions on the film in the comments!)
