It must have been a real mindf**k for people when they first learned that getting closer to the sun (aka increasing in elevation) in fact meant it was colder. Before everyone leaned what an atmosphere was it would totally have made complete sense for everyone to assume that like the other fire we know, the closer you are to the flame the hotter it feels, so the higher you climb, the closer to the sun you get, the warmer you would be. Sound logic and then bam! Opposite!!! LOL
