Not sure what to think about Dunkirk

I didn't read any reviews of this movie because I wanted to go in unencumbered. I just saw it, but I'm not really sure how I feel about it. It is not anything that I expected it to be.

It was probably one of the most uncomfortable movie experiences I've ever had, mostly due to the unsettling music and lack of dialogue.

Nolan's films all push the envelope, but I think Dunkirk is his most experimental film to date in terms of the structure.

There is something to be said about art that makes us feel uncomfortable. Do we see movies to be entertained, or do we see movies to have an artistic experience, or both on occasion? I wouldn't call this movie entertaining in almost any traditional sense, but it did challenge me to think about how the film was structured on an artistic level, causing me to go through YouTube to find interviews with Nolan about the film.

I came away with the conclusion that Nolan's primary goal was to make us feel, at least in some part, how the people who went through the experience felt. The movie doesn't really work to tell from a military standpoint what the operation was about or what it meant in the entire context of WWII, or even to make a point about war. But I think the film succeeds in giving us a taste of the feeling of unpleasantness those who experienced it firsthand must have felt.

I'm not sure I want to see it again, but I kind of want to, if only to further explore the artistic nature of the film.
