Question about Blomkamp's 'District 9'

I was watching the Oats studios shorts recently and got to thinking about District 9 and something popped into my head that I hadn't thought of before. Spoilers obviously.
Towards the beginning of the film they explain how the Prawns were abandoned here, likely by another race of potentially superior aliens. That statement combined with the fact that Wikus turns into a full fledged prawn got me thinking.
Are the Prawns' appearance just what happens to any living being when exposed to the goo? Could it be possible that the 'superior race' are the same original race as the "Prawns" and they just ditched the infected ones on Earth for fear of mass infection/extinction? It would make more sense as a motivation for abandoning them besides "we don't know why they were left here"
I think this fits with the moral of the film. Basically that the healthy segregate themselves from the unhealthy. Or rather when a portion of a population is "made sick" by extreme poverty, lack of education or actual disease, they are quarantined and abandoned to live in squalor. Similar to the African apartheid that the film not so subtly alludes to.
Maybe I'm daft but I didn't even think about it like that when I first saw it. Thoughts?
