How The Killing Joke kind of explained before he was The Joker, he was a failing comedian and everything was going wrong in his life. I believe he had a pregnant wife and he was trying to not disappoint her. Then takes a job with people he shouldn't and Batman interrupts, causing him to fall into the chemicals.
I think Dave Franco could nail this, especially after playing Greg Sestero. How Greg couldn't get any roles and was getting frustrated, how he turned to someone he didn't even really know for help.
