I was thinking of period pieces, and was having trouble coming up with examples that don't involve some sort of royalty in the plot. It seems that if the plot happens before 1900, the audience wants to know how royalty and government officials fit into the story. Which I find strange, since there are thousands of movies based in the modern era that make no references to presidents or governors or Prime Ministers.
The one exception I could think of a few examples was the American Revolution, but very few other than that. Am I wrong? Why is that? What movies are the exeption to that?
