I don't get the hate boner that reddit has for Avatar. Most often than not, I hear "The story was very generic" and that it was "all style and visuals" as a major criticism. At the same time, when movies like John Wick and Fury Road come out with all style but also generic-ass stories ( Love both movies though ), they're praised to high heavens here.
I for one, loved Avatar when it came out and still love watching it from time to time. Yes, it's story is predictable but the movie itself is a feat of great filmmaking and never do I ever hear ANY of the good things about the film mentioned here. If someone who hasn't seen Avatar were to come to reddit to get a feel for how the movie is, they'd think that the film was the worst thing since Room or Sharknado. It's mind-boggling how a film with so much good in it can spark so much undeserved vitriol.
Am I missing something here? I'm all for differing opinions and everything but does Avatar REALLY deserve that much hatred or is it just the backlash for the film making a whole bunch of money?
