Spoilers within, obviously.
I don't know why the writers chose such a sappy, melodramatic way to end the movie.
Tommy is bay far the superior fighter. He drops seasoned pros in seconds and is better in every way. He was a major threat even before any training.
Brendan is a one trick pony - for 3 fights he gets beaten and knocked around for 99% of the fight, then gets lucky with a hold and holds on and wins. Its like MMA pros have never seen or fought a wrestler in their entire life. Brendan is supposed to be a mediocre former UFC fighter who never threatened anyone, yet now he's withstanding beatings better than Rocky. And of course in the final act, he does the exact same thing to Tommy.
Brendan is groomed as the underdog throughout the movie and somehow more worthy of redemption, because he has a family, so of course he has to win. Meanwhile Tommy is the angry young man with no compass, and his only hope is to let go of all the rage by accepting defeat. There are also hints throughout how everyone has wronged Brendan. And he's portrayed as superior because he tries to talk to Tommy first (in which as is pointed out, he was full of shit).
Talk about cliched and unrealistic.
