Even though tons of movies try to get their own franchises off the ground, a lot of the time, the movies that actually got their sequels delivered to the big screen are the ones that didn’t exactly try to.
For me, I never would’ve guessed that Mission Impossible would be one of Paramount’s last chances to earn blockbuster money. I know the original 1996 movie had Tom Cruise, which probably helped, but the original movie was still somewhat risky since it was based on a tv show.
Movies shows that are based on tv shows are hit or miss, critically and commercially. For every Simpsons Movie, there’s a Wild Wild West. So even though Mission Impossible starred Tom Cruise (And had Brian De Palma directing), it wouldn’t have been too surprising if the movie bombed, especially considering all the other tv adaptations that failed in the 90s. But not only was the original Mission Impossible successful, it managed to get up to six movies.
With that in mind, what’s one movie you didn’t think would generate a popular film series?
