It did seem like at the time they gave her the Oscar because there was this feeling in the air that after being nominated for so many times, it was her time to win a 3rd Oscar but the more I see The Iron Lady, the more I feel it was undeserving. It might be a technically proficient performance but there's no emotion, Streep is so busy in getting every technicality right that it leaves away any nuance and deep characterization. It's like watching a comedy sketch of Margaret Thatcher and waiting for the jokes to come in and even with that, Maureen Lipman did a much better take on the Iron Lady.
There was word of Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks but Streep messed her chances up when she made tribute speech to Thompson while reminding the world what a bigot Walt Disney was. That was the worst kind of PR for Thompson.
Glenn Close was more deserving for Albert Nobbs. She was phenomenal in the movie, it was a pet project of hers she produced but the movie didn't make any money. If Close had banked on the fact this was her sixth nomination without a win, maybe she could have convinced voters especially since Streep was doing the whole "I deserve a 3rd Academy Award because I haven't won since 1983" shtick.
