Does letting people use your WiFi make it even after they left?

Might be a dumb question, but I don't know a whole lot about this kind of stuff. My family thinks the internet is running slow because too many people are connected to our WiFi and recently changed the password and told us not to give it out to anyone anymore. What I don't get is: these people aren't around, they're devices aren't actively using our WiFi. So why would that be effecting our internet speed right now? Hope I explained that right. I'm just confused in the logic. Just because someone used our WiFi once and will now automatically connect when they come over, shouldn't effect our WiFi in their absence... am I missing something? Please explain.
