Was the process of making a silent film more or less like it is today, where you start with a script, do storyboards, scout locations, film and then post-production, or was it looser and more on-the-fly given the inchoate nature of film-making?
I'm sure there was a lot of variety, at least up until the studio system fully set in, but I'm interested in how silent films were produced. If anyone can point me to a good source on the matter I'd be greatly appreciative.
