So, when I was subbing in an English class earlier this year the students were finishing a book in which a main character dies. It lead to a really fun discussion over whether or not a character needs to die in order for a story to move forward. In the particular book the death of one character leads to the development of another. I used Bridge to Terabithia as an example since that book/movie allows the character development to be seen sooner; where as, with their book it was the ending and the development was going to happen in the next book.
So, fast forward to today where I watched The Space Between Us for the first time. When it ended I was reminded of the aforementioned discussion because even though I really enjoyed the movie, I felt it would have been better if Asa Butterfields character, Gardner, had died instead of being miraculously saved and shuttled into space on time.
What are some movies you have watched and felt would have been made better by the death of a character? Not just because you did not like a character, but because it would have added to the story in a meaningful way.
