opinions on this situation?

i am a 19 yr old female from the southeast US. i am currently on a trip in Iowa City and i’ve been loving it so far. unfortunately, i just had a bad experience. i was walking beside of a friend on the sidewalk, so yes we were taking up both sides of the sidewalk. i saw a man approaching on my side so i politely tried to intertwine in front of my friend and behind the person in front of him to allow the man to walk on his side of the sidewalk. however, i was still sticking out of the single file since moving over anymore would push my friend off the sidewalk onto the road. the man then says to me “you think you could move over any?” in a very hostile tone and raised his arms in the air in frustration. my friends were a little taken aback by this, as at my university, walking doubles on the sidewalk is normal and expected. then, we were crossing the road, as directed by the walk sign. this woman honked and had followed us in her car. she proceeded to scold us for “harassing a homeless man” and letting us know that “we could go to jail for that” and that she should call the police immediately. i KNOW i am in a much different part of the country, where it may be abnormal or rude to walk doubles on sidewalks. i had not said anything to either of these parties besides “sorry.” to the man. is this a normal thing in Iowa and/or surrounding areas? should i be worried (anxiety already kind of took that over but oh well) or is this just another thing i am unsure of that happens a lot since i have never been this far west in the US. give me your opinion
