If your computer has 8gb of ram but can hold 16, could you use a 4gb to make 12gb?

I have a HP 15p030nr, it has 8gb of ddr3l 1600mhz ram but it says it can hold 16gb. So my question is can I use a 4gb stick instead of another 8gb to just make 12gb or does it have to be 16gb
