So I was on twitter and someone was disappointed that there existed an handmaid's tale sexy costume and was lamenting that "women can't have costumes that don't get sent to a sex shop after Halloween" So we had that little exchange:
"Well some women enjoy wearing revealing outfits at Halloween because they feel less judged that day. -that's fine if it was an option, but look at what we have to choose from!"
So I did and the first few sites I found, canadian since i'm canadian, had loads of non sexualized outfits. Hardly any showing bust or with skirts higher than the knees. So I said:
"Well I just did and I found many that seem fine to me show screenshots. Maybe it's an american thing?"
Then she said it was mostly low skirts and cat suits (I did not even see one cat suit tbh) and that the sexy ones were cheaper. I agreed they were cheaper because well... They were all very simple designs and used way less fabric. And I admited I didn't find the outfits to be sexualized, but maybe that's because I'm gay?
She accused me of mansplaining and said I was wrong. Which just confused me. I don't understand what she meant by that.
Is it really hard for women in general to buy non sexy commercial costumes or is it just an american phenomenon ?
Or she's just wrong and it's a myth?
I really wanted to understand her point of view but I saw many options on the sites so the no choice argument just felt weird for me. I agreed that the sexy costumes get too much advertisement and promotion but the argument was that there was no choice to begin with... If american and canadian women would like to share their experience shopping costumes it would help me understand what's the reality for you. Thanks in advance.
