Teacher Failing BF

Hi all, I hope this is the place to post this, but I need some advice. My boyfriend is in a fairly competitive art program at his school. He is in his first year after having his portfolio accepted. He is doing well in all of his classes except one. On the first assignment the teacher gave them he did his best, turned it in, and then was given a D. In addition the teacher told him to drop out of the program. He was really crushed and it destroyed a lot of his confidence. The feedback he got was in no way constructive and so he was just left to guess at what he did wrong. He talked to the teacher and the teacher backtracked on his comments a bit, but kept evading giving any real useful feedback so my BF moved on to the next assignment. He put a lot of work into it, and I had to coach him through just making some decisions because the harsh reaction of his teacher really destroyed his confidence in being able to do well. He got feedback midway through the assignment from the teacher and adjusted to try and please his feedback. He then turned it in, as per the requirements, and felt pretty decent about it and the teacher even told him he was getting better. Now he just got the grade back and the teacher gave him an F. Looking at his assignments compared to others in the class, it's not the best, but it sure as hell isn't the worst. He is following the assignment requirements, is putting in a great deal of effort, and has the drive to learn. In my mind that would mean maybe he gets a C on the assignment. Basically I'm asking what I should advise him to do. This is really causing a lot of stress for him and now it seems like the more he tries the worse this teacher gets. The teacher is apparently very nice to him in class and in person, but things just don't seem to be adding up to me.

TLDR; My bf is being failed in a class that he is putting his full effort into and can't get adequate feedback as to why.
