My rental apartment flooded today while I was at work. Floor and cabinets all ruined. All my personal property is ruined and/or soaked. I'm still assessing loss of property damages. What are my rights as a tenant? Can I withhold rent until the damages are repaired? I do have renters insurance. Do I need to make sure the damages exceed my deductible? Can the apartment manager demand I file a claim to pay for the repairs? How quickly does my apartment need to fix this? Can I ask for compensation through my landlord or do I have to file the insurance claim? Any help is appreciated. This unfortunately happened on a Friday afternoon so no office hours this wknd.
