I've been watching Jordan Peterson videos and he talks about this a lot, but I can't seem to understand it, especially with all of the jargon out there. Could somebody clear this up for me, keeping it simple?
From what I can gather, it is all of the parts of your personality that you don't use; your potential, you might say. Is this right? And if this is right, then would you be able to say that everybody has the same personality, only due to circumstance or choice we have different aspects of humanity in our shadows, and those aspects we have in our (on show) personalities vary in degrees? (e.g. Frank, an introvert, has extroversion in his shadow, but he may not be as introverted as Jerry, since it is on a scale).
Peterson often mentions how this is a scary topic, and talks about how you and I are no different to the Nazis. I feel like I understand what he is saying, but I don't understand why he always mentions how terrifying all of this is. So that makes me think that I'm missing something.
Lastly, how could we use this idea to better ourselves? Let's say I have a lot of confidence hiding in my shadow, and I know that it's there; how can I bring it out? Or is it more about going the usual route of gaining confidence, all the while knowing that I have the potential to be as confident as the best of them?
Any help on clearing this up would be appreciated. I was going to post on ELI5 but I was daunted by all of their rules.
