I just finished watching The Dark Knight for the shlajillionth time and noticed something: When Batman was interrogating The Joker, The Joker said, "...you choose one life over the other. Your friend, the District Attorney. **Or his blushing bride-to-be.**
How did The Joker know about Harvey's proposal? How did he know that she would say yes? By that time, only 2 people knew that she would say yes: Rachel and Alfred. Harvey didn't even know until like 5 seconds before she exploded and he got blown half to hell.
Did Alfred cut some sort of deal with The Joker? Earlier, Rachel mentioned that the only safe place in the city was Bruce's penthouse, so it's likely she went back there after she left the station. Did Alfred alert one of the Joker's men to come pick her up once she got there?
Throughout the movie, The Joker fucked with everyone. He got to Batman, Rachel, Harvey, the Mayor, the Commish, that Judge, a whole bunch of cops, Lau, the mob bosses, Mike Engel from Gotham Tonight, the ferry passengers and Stephens (the cop who lost six cowardly friends. Six!). And let's not forget about his original crew. He fucked with them so bad, they all killed each other.
He was able to manipulate them all!
Not only did he know how to manipulate people, but he knew how to infiltrate sensitive areas and take whatever he wanted. But that's mostly due to the fact that The Joker is an ex-CIA operative that was captured, tortured, and then eventually escaped (or was released) after going insane. I mean, he had no identifying biometrics on file. His identity was erased by the CIA. He was also quick to showoff his cover-story telling abilities. Very convincing, even though his stories weren't consistent. "You wanna know how I got these scars?"
Anyway...
Isn't it possible that The Joker knew Batman's identity? He seemed to know everything else. He probably put it together when Batman popped out of nowhere at the fundraiser, in Bruce Wayne's penthouse! He just didn't reveal it because he liked fucking with him too much. And now that he knows Batman's identity, he knows to go after the one closest to him. Alfred.
Maybe he was able to manipulate Alfred too. Maybe he gave Alfred the same ultimatum that he gave Batman: Rachel or Harvey? Or maybe Alfred decided the only way to deal with the madman was to burn down the forest. But instead of burn down, it was blow up. And instead of a forest, it was Rachel.
