How a cinema/theatre experience can alter your opinion of a movie

This might all seem obvious, or not, I don’t know. I’ve not really seen or heard people bring this up though, and it’s something I’ve noticed a lot in my own movie-going experience.

So I watched Into The Spider-Verse the day it came out. I was hotly anticipating it as huge Spidey fan and also as as a big fan of Lord & Miller. If that wasn’t enough, my favourite critics were raving about it.

I saw it like I said on opening day, there were maybe 15-20 people in the screening and, while I laughed at a few parts and enjoyed the animation (and Spider-Man Noir), I didn’t really see what all the fuss was about.

I don’t know who here is or isn’t on Letterboxd but I am and it currently sits at #18 above films like GoodFellas, Apocalypse Now, The Empire Strikes Back, Citizen Kane etc.

Seeing this insanely high score before I saw the movie no doubt had some affect on my enjoyment as well, but when I saw the movie a second time (I had to go again precisely because of all the praise- I wondered if I’d missed something) I loved it so much more.

The second time I saw it it had been out for a weekend and a few days, so word had spread and this time the screening I went to was packed, and suddenly because of the energy in the room I enjoyed it so much more. The jokes got bigger laughs, the story seemed more investing and I just overall felt like I connected with it much better.

Do I think it’s the 18th best movie of all time? No. But do I get the hype? Certainly much more than I did.

I suppose the point of this post is to tell people, if there’s a movie you’ve heard mad buzz about and wanted to love but didn’t, maybe it wasn’t the fault of the film and was to do with your viewing experience, and maybe a second viewing would heighten your opinion of it.

I also had this with Incredibles 2 (yes I only watch animated superhero movies, so what) where I had to walk in the pouring rain to the cinema then in my screening were a group of loud, obnoxious exchange students, so I was in a bad mood and didn’t love the movie like I wanted to. This week me and my girlfriend watched it again only this time online and from the comfort of our living room, and we both enjoyed it more as well.

Just an observation and maybe it’ll inspire a bit of hope and a second viewing if a movie you wanted to love disappointed you.

Edit: spelling.
