It has good but not phenomenal reviews. I saw it when I was younger and loved it. Watched it a few times recently and it holds up really well. To me, it's a fantastic character-driven journey that perfectly captures feelings of love, revenge, and salvation. You see the naive Dantes get betrayed, abused, and abandoned, which makes the glorious comeback and revenge so much sweeter. Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce are such great foils to each other. It clearly condenses and cuts out a lot of stuff from the book, but IMO it perfectly captures the essence of the book.
