The Englishman talks about a song or a story to distract them, AKA lulling them to sleep. He's Hypnos.
And the Irishman takes them as soon as they stop paying attention. He's Thanatos.
The book page you see at the beginning of the chapter mentions the Trapper feeling like he was falling, then shooting awake and not remembering who he was.
And all that being the case, that leads me to believe that the three travelers died in their sleep, and Mr. Thorpe on the roof was killed.
