First off, I’m not sure where I should even be posting this. I never make posts about anything, just mostly lurk through reddit. However, I’ve seen reddit give sounds advice and do great things. So I’ll just get started.
I work at a Pediatric hospital where we frequently use in-person translators for providers to more effectively communicate with families. We have many translators, but there’s this one in particular that we’ll just call John. He’s one of those guys that shows up to work with a huge smile on his face, greets everybody by name, and genuinely cares about his job, the people that work here, and the patients. I mean everyone loves this guy to death. But something absolutely terrible happened.
After ordering translation, John shows up and delivers some heart breaking news. With tears in his eyes, he lets us know he’s getting fired; and his last day is January first. He doesn’t want to leave. We’re all heart broken. I’m heart broken. This guy was the first to make me feel warmed and welcomed and as part of the team, and he’s a friend to everyone and myself.
I only know a few details surrounding what happened. John apparently showed up to the wrong testing place and was not able to get his credentialing done before the new year. The next test isn’t until after the new year and the director made the decision to let him go. I’m assuming there’s obviously more to the directors side of the story (maybe a staffing issue with flu season coming or something else). So, what I’m asking is what in the world can be done. I’m so torn and can’t get my mind off this. I feel like going to reddit is relatively passive in nature in addressing something as serious as a friend losing his job near the holidays, but I found out not an hour ago and am looking for any advice. A petition, emails, I mean where do I start? Does any one have experience in a situation like this where they desperately want to help?
