Both movies star Jake Gyllenhaal traveling through time into the near past and being put into an identical alternate universe in which he is the only one with free will and has a very specific amount of time to prevent a cataclysmic event, relating to an accident involving mass transit, which destroys the parallel universe and poses a threat to the real one. This ultimately leads to him sacrificing himself (or at least attempting to).
So yeah. That's a thing I needed to get off my chest.
